A Place in the Choir
There’s a great children’s song by Celtic Thunder which the chorus goes like this:
“All God’s creatures got a place in the choir
Some sing low and some sing higher,
Some sing out loud on a telephone wire,
Some just clap their hands, or paws, or anything they’ve got now”
All of us are special and unique! Whether we are a crow, a hummingbird, a black-capped chickadee, or a nightingale, we all have a place in the choir and are blessed as we balance on our telephone wires.
For the last 2000 years, most people on the globe have lived under the rule of a patriarchal society. This masculine thumb has been so ingrained in our societies and psyches that we have little inkling of knowing anything different. As women, poorer people, people of color, and people with disabilities, we’re used to being treated less than. Envisioning ourselves as equal to men and wealth is hard to fathom!
What if all creatures in the choir-no matter if we sing tenor or soprano-were treated the same?
What if race, gender, social status, or disability didn’t matter?
Who would we be?
How would we act?
Last week I read three eye-opening books which caused me to think about these questions and more. I recommend them to you. They are as follows.
Poverty By America: Desmond, Matthew
Orange is the new Black: Kerman, Piper
The Red Tent: Diamant, Anita
Even though we live in a male-dominated society where wealthy people have the power, we, the people always have a choice! We have the choice to stand up in love for ourselves or not! We have the choice to be victims of our circumstances or creators of them! We have the choice to let our voices be heard or silenced! We have the choice to educate ourselves or not!
No matter what, we have to make our voices heard in love! We have to take our power back! We have to fight and stand up for ourselves with a cup of tea in hand. Our words, our actions, our attitudes, and our faith are our powers. No person or circumstance can take our internal voice and wisdom away from us. We, now more than ever, have to be bold! Listen! Be compassionate! Understand! Respect one another! To trust! Communicate! Be honest! And to love one another. All voices in the choir matter! Not just the strong overzealous prima donnas!
I challenge you to sing out! Sing the song you came to sing! Recognize your strength and power! Never allow your race, religion, gender, or disability to hold you back! Have high expectations of yourself and walk with your head high! It’s possible to be true to yourself and to come from love at the same time! Listen to your inner voice, see your vision, speak the truth, follow your heart, reach out to others in love, tune in to spirit and God, and walk boldly forward. In this way, you’ll be a vital voice in the choir, in your family, community, and the world, and together, you and you will change the way you see and change the way you live!
