Teaching a child who is blind
If you teach a child who is blind or visually impaired, remember that it may take the child a little bit longer to do a given task or assignment than their peers.
Expect the child to learn and accomplish the same as their classmates but give them some extra room to perform a task. Don’t patronize or coddle. Rather, hold them in unconditional positive regard.
The child who is blind or visually impaired is a gift and a blessing in the classroom. Let this opportunity open the eyes for everyone to see their own gifts.
Remember to verbalize when demonstrating visuals with an attitude of inclusiveness and normalcy. Teach the student who is blind or visually impaired that they are a gift and show them how to reach their true potential.
Guide them like a star yet be variable like the wind.
