Four steps to staying on track
Sometimes it is easy for life to nudge us away from our passion or things we want to accomplish and we find ourselves getting off track. We choose to do the easy things like watching TV for hours, binging on Netflix, and eating processed foods. We don’t want to do the hard thing (whatever that might be), i.e., washing clothes, doing housework, exercising, working on a project, or making a healthy meal.
We all know when we are avoiding and are off track and too much of one thing just isn’t good for us.
Here are four things to try to get back on track.
#1 Write down a list of things you are avoiding. This list could be physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, financial, or creative in nature. Anything goes, don’t hold back.
#2 What is making you avoid these things? What excuses/reasons/stories are you coming up with? “It takes too much time! I don’t have enough money! I’m tired! I need more education! I want to do other things! I’m afraid!”
#3 Are your reasons valid or not? Most of the time, they are not. Most of the time we tell ourselves stories to justify our actions. “I have the time, I’m just not doing It. I have the knowledge; however, I tell myself I don’t. Money isn’t an issue; I just choose to spend it on other things. I choose to do the easy things in life because I’m lazy and don’t want to do the hard thing. I allow my fears to run my life so I can remain in the same stuck place.”
#4 Now that you have seen your behaviors, what changes can you make to get back on track? People usually want to take a large leap into change. Most of the time it is the small steps taken daily that make the difference. A baby doesn’t go from crawling to running in one day. Standing, then stepping forward and walking confidently takes time. Similarly, facing your avoidance, changing your attitude and story, and taking action takes time as well. Be gentle with you while you choose to change.
I challenge you to start by choosing one task from your avoidance list, write down your story about it, see if your story is true, and then commit to do at least one thing to change that story. Once you see results with the first item on your list, pick another avoidance item. Little by little you will knock your list down into smaller bite-size pieces and find yourself miraculously on track.
In this way you will change your attitude and take action towards changing the way you see and changing the way you live. The goal is always for you to live a life of greatness an to be unstoppable, unforgettable, and unbelievable!
