Leave It

When I’m out in public, I often hear the phrase by passing dog owners (over used and spoken with a harsh voice), “Leave it! Leave it! Leave it!” For Seeing Eye grads, we use these words (only once, and in a calm yet firm voice) “Leave it,” when we hear an upcoming barking dog, person chatting, playing children, or a meowing cat. We want our dog to keep going and not get distracted. For us, it’s a matter of safety.

This got me to thinking. Wouldn’t it be great if we as humans could use this phrase on ourselves! “Leave it,” to those distracting emails when we should be working. “Leave it,” when the folks in our lives are doing behaviors that no longer serve us. “Leave it,” when those negative voices come into our heads distracting us from our truth!

How come we can’t discipline ourselves to focus on our work, step away from people, and to switch our thoughts?

I think we can! We are the creators of our destiny, and as such we have the ability to stand in our greatness. There are always internal and external distractions. And, there is a difference in being busy and being productive. Sometimes one can be busy and get nothing done while at other times, one can be productive in a matter of minutes.

Here’s a little test to see if you are spending your time being busy or productive.

The next time you want to get something done, set a timer for 15 minutes. During that time, you are not to answer the phone, door, emails, or talk with anyone. Just do the assigned dreaded task. When the timer goes off, sit back and see what you accomplished. Was it more than you usually do?

If so, you can either go for another 15 minutes right away, try this again in the afternoon, and/or work your way up to once an hour.

Regarding the “Leave it” principle with friends, you may need to sit with yourself and take note if they are serving you in your life. If not, you can gently pull away and/or let them know that your relationship is toxic and you’re sorry, you need to not see them any longer.

Finally, for your thoughts, the best way to “leave it” and to keep them positive is to pray, meditate, read Self-help books, practice keeping a gratitude journal, and/or forgiveness journal. In time, switching those negative thoughts and only focusing on the positive ones will be second nature.

My challenge to you is to “Leave it”! Define your it, and “Leave It” behind. Keep your focus and do what is yours to do. Walking through life’s journey is short. Spend your time wisely and with productivity. Then, you’ll have more time for the fun stuff! Do this, and you’ll change the way you see, and change the way you live!
