Soaring Into Greatness Blog Post | David, Goliath, and You

David, Goliath, and You

I’m confident you’ve heard the story of David and Goliath?

Whereas the two armies of the Philistines and the Israelites were fighting with swords, brass helmets, and breastplates, David took three rocks from the stream to confront Goliath. With one swift and firm throw, the stone hit the forehead of Goliath sending him to the ground and killing him in an instant—enabling the Israelites to come out as the winners over the Philistines.

This isn’t a blog to teach lessons from the Bible; however, as we all know, we must face our own “Goliaths” in life, and how we do that is the question.

I’m pretty sure that some Israelites fought Goliath with all their might, yet either didn’t have the foresight or the belief that they could confront him and win. And I’m equally sure some didn’t fight for their fear got the better of them. David showed them their strength, and David showed them to trust themselves.

  • What about you?
  • What is your current “Goliath”?
  • Are you fighting him?
  • Are you in fear of the battle?
  • Do you have the skills to step forward and do what is yours to do?

Sometimes, I think our “Goliaths” are our fears, our belief that we can’t stand up for ourselves, or we make a bigger deal of the situation. And, I think sometimes, we get freaked out just from the word confront itself!

Doesn’t confronting sound scary?
I have to confront my boss!
I have to confront my partner!
I have to confront my friend!

What if we didn’t confront them?
What if we just challenged ourselves to be our own champions?
What if we just had a conversation?
What if we took confront out of our vocabulary?

I think if we changed the way we thought about confronting, we’d be able to converse with the other person/Goliath better. Confronting in its nature sounds like battle and we’re afraid to pick up our stones because we’re afraid we’re going to lose!

Every one of us has the skills to confront our Goliaths. We have the stones of strength already inside us.

  • What are your stones?
  • How do you see your battle ending?
  • Do you believe you will stand strong at the end of the day?

In order to be our own champions, to be the David in our lives, we must:

  1. Change our tactics
  2. Come prepared to our battle
  3. Know what we want
  4. Know our “stones” and strengths
  5. Be clear in our plan
  6. Be willing to bring in reinforcements and other soldiers if necessary
  7. Feel that we deserve our outcomes/dreams/desires
  8. Visualize the results we desire
  9. Believe that we can have our dreams
  10. Change confronting to championing

In these ways, we can move forward in our battle with courage, and not be paralyzed by our fears. We are the creators of our destiny! I challenge you to be strong, to be bold, to stand up to your fear Goliath, and have a compassionate conversation. In this way, you’ll change the way you see and change the way you live.
