The Joy Meter
Every Sunday on Denver’s Channel 9, the broadcaster asks, “What brought you joy this week?” The first time he asked the question, I had to stop making breakfast, sit down, and actually think about my response.
What brought me joy? Hmm.
I tried to think about profound events—something monumental that someone would be impressed with. Maybe I went on vacation to somewhere exquisite, or maybe there was a birth in my family, or perhaps I got a new job offer. Nope, none of these things were true for me!
What brought me joy?
As I brought my thoughts closer to my own personal experience, I discovered there were many answers to this question.
There was joy in:
- Finding my dog in the suitcase when packing to come home from a speaking presentation.
- Listening to a flock of geese flying in the winter skies.
- Savoring homemade Thanksgiving meal at a friend’s home.
- Touching the folds of my green-velvet dress when putting it on for a singing Christmas party.
- Walking on fresh virgin snow when taking my dog out at 5:00 am.
There was joy in so many things!
As the weeks passed, I started noticing that I was making mental notes of what brought me joy that week. And, I noticed too, that when the anchor asked his Sunday morning question, I could spill out some answers into the echoes of my apartment.
This begs me to ask you, what brought you joy this week?
Do you remember?
Was it something large or small?
No matter if joy equals the sights, sounds, and tastes of the holidays, or everyday occurrences, guaranteed there is something that made you smile or laugh out loud this week.
I challenge you not only to take stock of what brought you joy this week but, perhaps before you close your eyes each night, reflect upon what brought you joy for that day. In this way, your body, mind, and spirit will fall asleep happy. In doing this, you’ll change the way you see and change the way you live.
