Spring Cleaning

Every year about this time folks start to open their windows, clean the carpets, closets, drawers, garages, and sheds. They’ll announce to all they see, “It’s time for Spring cleaning!”

Yet sometimes we don’t feel like putting in the effort. Taking a day off, staying in our jammies, binging on Netflix, leaving dirty dishes in the sink, letting laundry remain in the basket unfolded, or leaving our beds unmade is easy to do. When we do this, our energy lowers and our thoughts can go to the “dark side.” If we continue to follow down this path, getting back on track becomes difficult.

There is psychological value in taking time off and caring for yourself—yet there has to be a balance. Too much of any one thing isn’t a good thing.

Last week, I took some much-needed time off. However, when I did so, I neglected following up on personal and business appointments and phone calls. I reverted back to old behaviors of my youth. Most of the time I’m on track, moving forward, and healthy; however, sometimes I follow the old road of dysfunction and destruction. Then, when I wandered back to the land of functionalism, I had to pick up the pieces of my behavior and make my apologies. And, at the end of the day, I had to spend extra time taking care of my apartment, which I had put on hold while I was binging and avoiding.

What about you? Have you ever followed these crazy footsteps?
Did you have to clean your messes up later?
What condition is your home in today?
Do you see any correlation between your physical environment and your mental state?

When I’m on track, my day starts with my bed made, I wash my dishes after each meal, and, when I put an article of clothing on my body and find I no longer want it, I give it away. In doing these activities on a regular bases I not only keep my physical house in order, I’m keeping my psychological and spiritual house clean as well.

A few days ago, a friend of mine sent me a quote which said:

“Inaction breeds doubt and fear. Action breeds confidence and courage.”

I challenge you to take action and spring clean your house and psyche on a daily basis. I challenge you to fight all the mental, physical, psychological, and spiritual monsters that hold you back from your greatness. And, I challenge you to find courage and confidence and change the way you see, and change the way you live.
