The Impossible Dream
The lyrics from the chorus of Luther Vandross’s song “The Impossible Dream” state:
“This is my quest
To follow that star
Ooh, no matter how hopeless
No matter how far
To fight for the right
Without question or pause
To be willing to march, march into hell’
For that heavenly causeAnd I know
If I’ll only be true
To this glorious quest
That my heart
Will lie peaceful and calm
When I’m laid to my rest.”
This caused me to think, how many of us go for the Impossible Dream?
Too often I think we settle to not reach for that star because we think it’s too far or too hard. We convince ourselves that it’s okay to be content to look up at the stars, notice how pretty they are, and then to turn our eyes downward shuffling forward never to look skyward again!
By settling, being content, doing what we’re supposed to do, and living day-to-day, I believe we become stagnant, unhappy, discontent, and bored.
What if time and money were no object?
What if you could do, live, and be who you were born to be?
What if you could go anywhere you wanted?
What if you could wave your magic wand and your dreams would come true?
In 2017 I wrote an unpublished workbook tentatively entitled, Soaring Free, How to Turn Barriers into Blessings. I ask these questions and more. The purpose is to get you to start changing your thought process from “I can’t” to “I can”. As you probably know by now, I believe that All things are possible with a positive Attitude and persistent Action.
I think it’s good to stretch ourselves no matter if it’s a new hobby, new skill, new adventure, or a new vacation! When is the last time you’ve shaken things up and tried a new recipe, gone to a concert, played in the rain, or laughed out loud?
I’ve heard it said that if older people don’t do something new with their brains after they reach 60-years old, that this is one (exercise being the other) of the factors in getting Alzheimer’s Disease. In order to prevent this from happening, no matter what your age, why not stretch your eyes upward and gaze at the stars?
Julia Cameron says in The Artist’s Way, “Do you know how old you’ll be by the time you learn to play the piano? … The same age you’ll be if you don’t.”
Here are three steps to guide you forward in living your dreams.
- Write down some things that you’d like to do if you indeed had all the money and time in the world.
- Pick one or two from your list.
- Take one tiny action towards that dream.
Remember, Thomas Edison, Henry Ford, Marie Curie, and Mother Teresa once had what was thought, by some, as Impossible Dreams and look what they achieved! If they could have their dreams, why not you? I challenge you to dream your dream, follow your star, and swing on it hard and high!
