What do you want?
Back in the mid 80’s, I took a course which was said by many folks to be a cult, similar to The Forum and EST, known as LifeSpring. The organization may have been, and though there are issues I have with some parts of their philosophy, some 45 years later, there were a lot of concepts that are still valuable today. I’m grateful to them for beginning my journey into growth and Self-awareness, eventually earning a masters in psychology and counseling, and then to writing my memoire and now blogs.
One of the exercises I participated in was called, “What do you want.” After being divided into pairs, one person’s job was to say only “What do you want?” over and over. The second person would say, “I want a new car, … I want a new house … I want to be fulfilled … I want to be happy … I want freedom … I want peace.” The goal is to go from your external desires to your internal ones.
As my role as psychotherapist, coach, friend, and now financial educator, I’ve come to realize that many people don’t have the slightest idea as to what they want. They either dream too big wanting the Tesla, or they dream too small only wanting to pay their monthly bills. It’s good to have these dreams and wants, for, Man’s goals should exceed his grasp; yet, in the big picture, probably what most people want is joy and freedom of time. And, we believe that the Tesla driver has these things.
We all keep going round and round the treadmill of life chasing our wants. We’re busy, oh so busy, chasing our tails. Don’t you think if we were clear on our truest want, we could get off the treadmill and spend time walking in the sunshine instead?
I challenge you to spend at least ten minutes asking yourself either in writing or out loud, “What do you want? … What do you want? … What do you want?” Each time state your want and then immediately ask yourself again! You’ll know your answer when your final “What do you want” brings you to your heart’s deepest desire and brings your soul peace. Here’s to more days in the sun. Take the challenge and change the way you see and change the way you live.
