The Slow Lane or the Fast Track

Life often gives us two choices: to crawl through the slow lane or to step boldly onto the fast track. Both paths are real, both paths are tempting, and both paths teach us something about ourselves. The question is: which one will you choose today?
I know what the slow lane feels like because I’ve lived there plenty of times. It is the land of hesitation, resistance, and endless second-guessing. When life nudges me toward something new, my mind sometimes grabs a hold of old patterns and whispers, Resist. Attach. Insist. Deny. Stop. Second guess. Whine. Argue. Defend. Protest. Cry. Struggle. And perhaps the most telling—ask others when I already know the answer myself.
Sound familiar?
The slow lane may be safe, and it is exhausting. Every detour takes energy. Every stall can cost momentum. At the end of the day, I’m left wondering not how I couldn’t do it, but rather, how I kept myself from moving forward in the first place.
Then there is the fast track. The quick approach doesn’t mean reckless; it means intentional. It’s when Spirit murmurs, “Trust me. Step out. Let your wings catch the wind.” Here, the actions are very different: Visualize. Pretend. Prepare. Dodge. Roll. Serpentine. Do not waver over intentions. Alternate your approaches. Release your doubts. Show up, even when nothing happens. And keep giving thanks in advance.
When I step into the fast track, I feel the difference immediately. Gratitude opens the doors. Intuition sharpens. Opportunities appear. And my heart feels lighter, as if I’m gliding instead of trudging.
Even my guide dog, Miss Ava, knows the difference. On our morning walks, she either tugs me forward with eager confidence—the fast track—or slows to sniff every blade of grass—the slow lane. Both are part of the journey, and both remind me that I get to choose how I move through life.
The truth is, both lanes are available every morning when we wake up. Sometimes, we slip into the slow lane without even realizing it—until the frustration builds and the weariness settles in our bones. Other times, we find ourselves sprinting on the fast track, amazed at how doors swing wide and how easily joy rushes in. The beauty is, we get to choose. The steering wheel is in our hands.
If you’re caught in the slow lane today, pause. Notice the thoughts you’re repeating. Ask yourself if you’re resisting more than you’re releasing. Then, gently shift. Begin to see yourself already moving, already thriving, already grateful. Spirit doesn’t need perfect conditions to move you forward; it just needs your willingness to try again, wings open.
And here’s the good news: even a single thought of gratitude can shift you from one lane to the other. One prayer. One vision. One declaration that you are ready. That’s how fast transformation can happen.
I challenge you to pay attention to your patterns. When you find yourself resisting, name it. Then pivot—visualize, prepare, release, give thanks. Share your experiences with someone who needs encouragement. Your shift might just inspire theirs. For in doing so, you will change the way you see and change the way you live.
