The Blind Elephant in the Room and You
I’m a blind woman. Nervous, afraid, don’t know what to say, and embarrassed. These are reasons people in our society can have a hard time approaching and interacting with me, a blind person. We all know this behavior as, ignoring the elephant in the room. However, this dynamic can be changed, and you can be a significant part of the change.
To dissipate the Blind Elephant in the Room, I believe you must see, speak, and touch the blind elephant. Too many times, subconsciously you’ve let your own Self-blinding beliefs stop you from connecting with people with visible or invisible disabilities. You can’t help this. You get nervous and don’t know how to act or what to say. You say funny things like, “It’s over there” to a blind person, and then feel guilty for you think you’ve hurt my feelings or said the wrong thing. Don’t worry, you didn’t. News flash! … I didn’t wake up blind this morning! I have heard see, watch, look before!
Sighted people think I see the world as all black, I think sighted people see the world in living color, and the truth is somewhere in between. We, you and I, must build relationships with one another to see one another. Relationship building takes doing activities together, like attending church services, watching a movie, or working on a project together. In this way, time, trust, communication, honesty, respect, and love can be fostered. What’s important here, is to address the blind elephant! See us, speak to us, and touch us. Be bold! Be brave! And, Be assertive!
If any of what I’m saying makes sense to you, and you’d like me to speak more on this topic, I have a phenomenal interactive presentation for you that will do exactly that. I will take you on a journey where intentionally you’ll begin to change the way you see, change the way you live, and change the way you relate to others. I promise you that through humor, and heart-warming, marvelous storytelling you are going to see, speak, and touch the blind elephant in the room, me. You’re going to feel so much more at ease after this talk. You will have the confidence to approach me, as you would any other person.
If this presentation (The Blind Elephant in the Room) doesn’t work for you, perhaps you know someone in your personal or professional circles who would find this talk valuable. I love to travel, so, no matter where your connections live, my wings can always soar in that direction.
