My Story Your Journey
When I finished writing Soaring into Greatness: A Blind Woman’s Vision to Live Her Dreams and Fly, I thought I had told the story I needed to tell.
My story.
The blindness. The music. The people who believed in me. The people who didn’t. The obstacles, adventures, mistakes, losses, laughter, and unexpected turns that somehow carried me to places I could never have imagined.
Then came the Ms. Colorado Senior America pageant. As part of the pageant, I had 35 seconds to share my philosophy of life. Thirty-five seconds! How do you squeeze a lifetime into that?
I began: “I believe my desire to fly must be bigger than my fear of falling. Vision is internal, not external, and is guided by my heart, not my eyes.” I went on to say that to be free—to fly—I must want my dream, feel my dream, believe my dream, and most importantly, live my dream. I ended with: “I’m the creator of my destiny, the composer of my symphony, and I choose to live a life of greatness!”
Those 35 seconds didn’t end when I walked off the stage. The philosophy continued to grow, eventually becoming my challenge to myself and others: to live unstoppable, unforgettable, unbelievable lives.
Then people started asking me a question: How can I do that, too?
Good question. I could tell people my story. I could encourage them to believe in themselves. I could tell them to spread their wings and fly. How?
How do we move from being inspired by someone else’s journey to actually changing our own?
Soaring Into Your Greatness: A Workbook became my answer.
This time, I’m not asking you simply to read my story. I’m asking you to explore yours. The workbook is built around three words that have shaped much of my own journey: Alignment. Attitude. Action.
Alignment asks us to become still enough to listen. Are our choices aligned with who we truly are? Are we listening only to the noise around us, or are we listening to that quiet inner guidance that knows when something is right—or when something needs to change?
Attitude asks us to examine how we choose to see what happens in our lives. We don’t control everything that comes our way. Heaven knows I’ve learned that one! We do have choices about the meaning we give our experiences and what we carry forward from them.
And then comes Action. We can pray. We can meditate. We can listen for guidance. We can set intentions and dream magnificent dreams. Eventually, we have to move our feet. Sometimes boldly. Sometimes reluctantly. Sometimes one tiny, scared-to-death step at a time. Believe me, I’ve done all three.
That’s why the workbook blends the practical with the spiritual. It includes questions and exercises, along with reflections and inspirational, spiritual thoughts. Creating a meaningful life requires both: listening within and then being willing to act on what we hear.
Where are you now?
Where do you want to go?
What might be standing in your way?
What is your heart trying to tell you?
And what could happen if you trusted that guidance enough to spread your wings anyway?
My memoir was about discovering that blindness didn’t have to determine the boundaries of my life. The workbook goes beyond blindness. We all encounter boundaries—some placed in front of us by circumstances or other people, and some we unknowingly place around ourselves.
My story. Your journey. Soaring into Greatness tells you where I’ve been. Soaring Into Your Greatness turns the questions over to you.
And now, after a lot of writing, revising, questioning, creating—and probably a few choice words along the way—my workbook has been released and is available now on Amazon.
My website is also being rebuilt. Soon, you’ll be able to purchase signed copies directly from me: the memoir for $20, the workbook for $15, or both together for $30.
Of course, I’m delighted to have another book out in the world. That’s not why I wrote this one. I wrote the workbook because people asked me how they, too, could live unstoppable, unforgettable, unbelievable lives. I don’t believe I have their answers. I believe they do.
Sometimes we simply need help becoming quiet enough to hear them, courageous enough to trust them, and willing enough to take the next step.
We each have greatness within us. We each have wings. Perhaps soaring isn’t about becoming someone greater than we are. Perhaps soaring means becoming more fully who we were created to be. And because of that, my hope is that as you soar into your own greatness, you will change the way you see and change the way you live.
