On making progress

Today I am focusing on progress. This reminds me of the saying, “Progress not perfection,” or, “Practice makes you better, nothing makes you perfect.”

We all are works in progress; learning, growing, evolving every day. We all are striving to go to the light, sun, God. We all want to be better today than we were yesterday. Will we ever reach perfection? No, not in the human sense; however, as children of God and ultimately, spiritual beings, all things are possible.

Robert Browning the nineteenth-century British writer stated, “Ah, but a man’s reach should exceed his grasp, or what’s a heaven for?” Similarly, Gestalt therapy centers around the belief that we all have a basic human drive towards emotional and physical health, towards a mind-body integration, and towards wholeness and balance.

In the name of progress, we need to let go of constantly wanting to be perfect, of criticizing ourselves for anything and everything, expecting others to be perfect and judging them for not being so. We all are doing the best we can with the circumstances we are given.

I am blind. Will I ever see? No. However, does my lack of vision keep me from being the person I choose to be? No. Just because I cannot see with my physical eyes doesn’t mean I don’t see with my inner vision or spiritual eyes. The trick is to acknowledge that I’m blind, embrace this truth, to ask for assistance when needed, to stand on my own feet and push myself to be strong, to acknowledge the fears, face them, and step forward boldly into my Self.

I will always be blind; however, it is how I choose to look at my Self that truly matters. What we need to do, today, tomorrow, and every day is to love ourselves and others and treat ourselves and others with respect and dignity. If we followed this simple law of truth, then everything else would fall smoothly into place making our world a better place in which to live.

Therefore, today, go forth, and take one small step/action towards evolving into the person you choose to be.
