The Light That Was Never Missing

Once upon a time, the world had gone dark.
There were no lights to guide the people. Then, far off in the distance, a tiny flicker appeared on the horizon. The people leaned forward. Was it real? Could this be the light they had been waiting for?
They stood in silence—praying, hoping, believing. The light moved a little closer.
They gasped.
Yes. This is the light we need.
They barely whispered, afraid to jinx it, holding their breath, standing still.
Another moment passed. Another small step closer. Soon, they thought, soon we will be able to see again. How glorious that day will be.
Many long, dark nights passed. At last, the light was close enough to almost touch.
A woman stood holding her candle, steady and radiant. Below her, the people cried out with expectation.
Please—give us your light.
She took a deep, peaceful breath.
“My precious ones,” she said, “I stand before you not to show you my light. I stand here to tell you that you already are the light.”
No, no—we are in the dark. We have waited for years for you to guide us.
“I know,” she said gently. “You want me to lead you out of the darkness. And yet, this is not mine to do.”
Please don’t go. We need your light.
“It is not my light you are seeking,” she said. “It is yours. Once you know your brilliance, your power, your love, your peace, your joy—then your own light will turn on.”
The people stood stunned.
Then a young voice cried out, “She’s right. The light I seek is already inside me.”
And just like that, her heart lit up.
The crowd gasped again. That one is gifted, they thought. I can’t possibly do that.
“Yes, yes, you can,” the voice called out. “Just believe. All things are possible. I did it, and so can you.”
And one by one, the villagers’ heart lights began to shine.
The woman smiled. “Now that you know, you must let your light out. You were not given this gift without purpose. Shine your heart light into the world, and the world will be healed.”
And so it was.
Candles multiplied. Hearts opened. Light traveled. By the end of the long, dark night, every street glowed. People ran and laughed. Carolers sang. Sleigh bells rang.
Peace, joy, love, and faith returned.
And instead of living happily ever after, they lived knowing this truth:
Every circumstance can be overcome.
Every heart can be mended.
Every angel has wings.
Hold your candle.
Lift your hand high.
Be the beacon.
You are here, right now, to be the light.
You, me—together—we are little candles in the night.
Let us go forth and light up the world,
and change the way we see
and change the way we live.
