If You’re Happy and You Know it . . .
Last week, I went to a preschool in Denver where I presented a “Sing along with Gail” program for 80 three-year-old children. One of their favorite songs was, “If You’re Happy and You Know It.” We all know the words, If you’re happy and you know it clap your hands, … stomp your feet, … shout hurray!!! This got me wondering, what song do I wake up singing every morning?
I remember Joe Sabah—founder of the Colorado Speaker’s Association—saying that every morning as he took his shower, he’d sing the song by Allie Wrubel / Ray Gilbert:
My, oh, my, what a wonderful day
Plenty of sunshine headin’ my way
What a wonderful way to start the day, wouldn’t you say?
Sometimes, when visiting schools, we make up other words to the “Happy and You Know It” song. If you’re happy and you know it, kiss yourself, or shake your friends hand, or smile, or wiggle your nose, or turn around in circles, or stick your tongue out! . . . You get the idea!
If you’re happy and you know it, sing, “Zip-a-dee-doo-dah, zip-a-dee-ay.” Why not!
There are so many ways to start our day! We can start with a frown and a mindset of doom and gloom—or—we can start with a smile on our lips and a song in our hearts. We can expect the worst and/or anticipate the best. There are always two ways of looking at the situation. You know, that glass half full or empty thing.
Of course, we all have concerns and things that worry us. We’re human! Yet, being human doesn’t mean we have to focus on the negative! We can choose to Visualize what we want, Feel the feeling of having that in our lives, Believe all things are possible, and then Live as if this manifestation has already come true. Want it, Feel it, Believe it, Live it!
Want to lose weight? See yourself there! Feel what you’d be like lighter! What could you do that you don’t do now? What would you be wearing? Then believe you have the power to make this a reality. You can eat, exercise, drink water and be the change you’d like to see! Now, take action and live as though you are already there. You, indeed are the creator of your destiny.
If you’re happy and you know it, all things are possible. You could start your day by singing, “If I’m happy and I know it, I got the raise; or, if I’m happy and I know it, I can go to Hawaii.” The words of the song can transform your entire day into a splash of joy.
I challenge you to begin your day with a song! Be creative! Spend at least five minutes singing out loud. Even if you believe you “can’t” sing, sing anyway. In doing this one little act each morning, you will change the way you see, and you will change the way you live!
